Types of Charging Stations

Electric vehicle charging stations are primarily categorized according to their intended application, which determines the maximum charging speed. The two main types are Level 2 stations (standard AC charging) and Level 3 stations (DC fast charging):

Level 2 – Regular charging

For charging at your regular parking spot

The regular charging solution for charging any electric/plug-in hybrid vehicle is using a level 2 charging station. Depending on the parking area layout, the charging station can be installed on a wall either indoors or outdoors, or on the ground on a pedestal.

Level 2 charging stations can recharge any electric or plug-in hybrid vehicle in 1 to 8 hours, depending on the vehicle’s onboard charger, battery capacity and level of charge.

Level 3 – Fastest charging

For vehicles that need to be on the road

In some cases, such as vehicles travel extended kilometers on daily basis, emergency response vehicles, etc. your business may consider Level 3 (DC) charging stations. These chargers are are capable of recharging an electrical vehicle for 100km in just about 20 minutes. Keep in mind that these stations use either a CCS 2 (combo) or CHAdeMO connector and the compatibility varies among various vehicles.

Level 3 chargers are also used to charge heavy vehicles such as truck and buses which have large batteries and no on-board charger, and rely solely on Level 3 (DC) charging.

I have a fully electric vehicle, what ill I need?
A fully electric vehicle will typically use up to 16A three-phase (11kW) or up to 32A single-phase (7.4kW). A three-phase 32A (22kW) charging station covers all cases.
I have a plug-in hybrid, what will I need?
A plug-in hybrid normally charges at 16A or 32A amps from a single phase. Even if you have a 3-phase charger, your vehicle will only draw power from a single phase.
My vehicle supports 3-phase charging but my power supply is single phase. Will I have a problem?
You can install either a 3-phase charger (in case you upgrade your power supply or move) or a sigle phase one. In any case your charging speed will be limited single phase charging.
How many charging stations does a company with a fleet of electric cars need?
The ideal ration is one Level 2 charging station per vehicle.
Which charging station should I choose, with a socket or with an integrated cable?
Unless you are the sole user of the charging station and the charger is in a private, indoor location, we recommend a charger without an integrated cable for professional and commercial use.
Can I install a residential charging station at work?
Professional charging stations offer functions such as load balancing for optimal current distribution, the ability to connect to a CPO platform, and more. Even if a residential model meets the your current needs, you may need to replace it when you install more chargers in the future.
I want to offer fast (DC) charging to my customers, anything I need consider?
The DC charging stations are several times more expensive than a Level 2 charger, they require a larger and more expensive electrical infrastructure. Consequently the charging cost for the user should higher. DC charging is the recommended solution for motorways and gas stations.
